Bishop Auckland
The Bishop Auckland Constituency Labour Party covers western County Durham, including Bishop Auckland, Barnard Castle, Shildon, Crook and the rural communities of Teesdale and Weardale. Our area is shaped by mining, railways, farming and market towns, each with its own strengths and challenges.
Coal, rail and manufacturing once defined local life, creating close‑knit communities and a strong tradition of working people standing together. Those roots explain why Labour values run deep. After a period of political change, Labour won back the seat in 2024.
By 2026, heavy industry has gone. Most jobs are now in manufacturing, public services, retail, care, agriculture and tourism. Wages and opportunities still lag behind the national average, even as regeneration and heritage projects bring new investment to town centres.
Bishop Auckland CLP reflects Labour’s aims: fairness, opportunity and security for working people; strong public services; and communities having a real say in their future. Our focus is on secure work, good local services and ensuring regeneration benefits local people.
