Lovely sunny day Saturday, meeting with people on Newgate St in Bishop Auckland, and asking them which Labour policies they like most.
1. Train and recruit 10,000 more nurses and midwives and 7,500 more doctors every year, paid for with a tax on millionaire non-doms; and reform the NHS to focus on prevention and social care.
2. Introduce a tax on Amazon and other online giants to cut business rates and provide extra funds to revamp the high street, and give powers to local communities to take over boarded up shops.
3. A proper windfall tax on energy companies to cut bills for households and small businesses, and freeze council tax, preventing the Tory 5% rise.
4. A modern childcare system, including free universal breakfast clubs in every primary school to support working parents.
5. Introduce free bus travel for secondary and sixth-form students so parents can afford to send their children to the school they choose.
6. A new industrial strategy, including £28 billion per year capital investment in clean energy production and net zero, creating a million skilled well-paid jobs while protecting the environment. And setting up Great British Energy, as a publicly owned producer, making Britain energy secure and cutting our bills.
7. Clean up our rivers with heavy fines and tighter regulations to stop water companies dumping sewage.
8. More frontline police and stronger action on anti-social behaviour (the last Labour government cut crime, but under the Tories it has risen as frontline policing has been halved).
9. Back the builders not the blockers – build affordable homes and support the next generation to buy them, giving local people and first-time-buyers first dibs, and a government backed insurance system to make it easier to get mortgages.
10. Improve access to mental health care with trained counsellors in every school and a new right for adults to get treatment within one month.
